I stupidly gave Uber Invasion another chance. Something actually happened, but all the "big" action scene did was highlight just how much worse the art had gotten.
Look at these action scenes of the first run compared to Invasion (spoilers blacked out)
original
Invasion
shit! After a 2 year hiatus and kickstarter to relaunch their only successful series besides Crossed? THIS is what they come back with?
Not only did that art go to shit, they apparently hit a reset button for the characters. A big point of tension was how one of the top 3 German super soldiers was a sadist, with another just doing their duty while the other knew Hitler was bullshit. CAN'T BE HAVING ANY OF THAT! The reset button was hit and now they're all bland generic soldiers.
Rereading the early original issues, I forgot just how many plotlines and conflicts they abandoned with no resolution. Tons of stuff happens in the first 15 issues. After that it's filler filler filler promising something huge but when that thing finally happens it's a big dud and everything else peters out.
It's a shame. This seems like one of those perfect instances of a book with an interesting premise but terrible execution that begs a premium channel series adaptation in the hands of better writers. If you're going to go with an alternative history WWII story, this would make a more entertaining fluff show than (completely missing the point) Man in the High Castle. |
