It was at a company I knew I was leaving. We were hiring for a QA spot. To the day the position was filled, I couldn't get a straight answer out of the people involved as to what sort of mix they wanted, in terms of manual QA versus automated QA. So I didn't particularly worry about it.
The new VP of engineering wanted people to do homework for the interview. I think it's dumb to ask people to invest their free time in something that may not even get them a callback. Especially since the company was going down the shitter. (And it did, terrible place to work now.) Nevertheless, I asked people to write some test cases and implement some automation, but if you couldn't do the automation that didn't disqualify you.
The replies I got back from WHITE MALES UGH TEARS were actually, well, actually not that great. I get that some people with 15 years of experience probably felt that "homework" is as dumb as I thought it was. That did let them get their asses kicked by an Indian woman who wasn't a permanent resident. She wanted it more than anyone else and right from the get-go, right from the pre-interview portion of it she did a great job. I had to make a couple arguments to get her an interview. The company actually fought me on this. Not because she was a woman but because her status in the country was only secure until 2018. Seeing how I knew I was going to be gone in a matter of weeks, I didn't give a shit about what the place would be like in 2018.
The best part is that a few us ended up ranking the people we wanted to bring in. One guy got third place, the guy mentioned above that half-assed his test cases. The director of HR brought him in anyway for reasons I still don't understand. It may have very well been that he called the wrong person or whatever. The guy was just as disinterested in being there in person as he was in writing up the test cases.
The Indian gal did a great job in person and they extended her an offer. I've since heard from multiple people that she's done a great job.
I don't have a point here. Wait, yes I do. I will say that if you are a minority in today's market and show aptitude for the spot there's a certain section of people that will trip all over themselves to at least bring you in for an on-site interview. But after decades of being a minority and not even being able to get one's foot in the door, it's OK that this is the case right now, in my humble opinion. Oh, and making applicants jump through hoops before meeting them is dumb. If you do it after meeting them that sits better with me. Doing it before hand speaks of a mentality that the employer's time is worth more than the prospective employee and that is not always the case, no matter how much your stupid app "shakes up" an industry nobody gives a shit about. |
