Someone made the point to me recently that political debate these days is mostly people talking past one another. People take the most absurd position from "the other side" and act like that is representative of everyone who disagrees with them. So, for example, lefties are always arguing about Libertarianism, as if it were more than a fringe movement that most Republicans would identify as weirdos. The Cable brothers are always talking about the latest tweets from radical feminists, as if debunking that bullshit would mean anything to mainstream Democrats.
Libertarianism appeals to angsty teenagers and people who see themselves as entrepreneurs or captains of industry. It's not appealing to the common man or woman. Basically, it says that if you are on the bottom of the social pyramid, it's because you are a loser. That's not a message people want to hear. They want to hear that they're on the bottom because society done them wrong! (socialism) or the evil jews did it (fasicsm) or evil capitalists have rigged the system (communism). Or because God is testing them and will reward them for their virtue later (Christianity). Nobody wants to be blamed for being a loser. So Libertarianism will never be popular.
Of course, ideologies can still be scary even if they're not popular. Theoretically a small cabal of neo-monarchists or communists could seize control of the government. I dunno. It seems crazy, but so does everything about politics these days. But those ideologies explicitly legitimize the use of state force against dissenters. Libertarians believe in keeping to themselves and not using violence on others. There will never be a Libertarian Stalin for the same reason there isn't a Protestant Pope. |
