I think the character of Thor can work pretty well as part of an ensemble. He's the Avengers' Joey, which unfortunately made his own movie Marvel's Joey. Some of the fish out of water stuff was "fun", I guess? The sequel was a derivative mess of Star Wars prequel and Lord of the Rings. It was so forgettable that every attempt I make to dredge up a specific memory is met with one from Hellboy 2. I didn't even know I saw Hellboy 2 until I tried to remember Thor 2! That's how inessential Thor 2 is.

I would like a movie where Thor makes out with his brother Loki for five full minutes, and I would like it to be so awkward and unsexy that all of tumblr instantly dries up and blows away. Then I would like the Hobbits to come out of their burrows and build a new tumblr, one with traditional values and guys fucking moles and moles wearing glasses and all the other stuff that's been driven underground by inclusivity and rainstorms. Mark Ruffalo cameo and boom, there's your Thor 3.

I don't think I ever bought a Thor comic. There was a trade paperback of Stan Lee origin stories that featured him solo among others. I heard that Thor was really good when Walt Simonson wrote it, but I haven't read those myself. Like you said, I like him as part of an ensemble. He's not played for goofs in comic books. Some bits of his I liked as part of a team is when there was a scene after the Masters of Evil incapacitated the Avengers and a lineup of something like She-Hulk, Doctor Druid, Black Knight and Thor were all trying to decide who the leader of the Avengers would be going forward. Thor announced that he would do it, even though at the time (in his own comic) he was under a curse that had reduced his physical body to jello. He was just keeping it together through some Norse armor or something.

Of course, everyone starts arguing with him, of course you can't do it, fuck off, blah blah. I'm sure I am recalling the scene incorrectly. He was correct, however, it should have been him because Doctor Druid took over the Avengers and turned into a bad guy. In retrospect, Thor seems like an authority figure in ensemble casts in comics. There's an element of "we're all in trouble when Dad gets home" when he isn't there at the beginning but shows up. When some bad guys nailed Angel's wings to a subway in the X-Men and Thor shows up out of nowhere to save him, I thought that was a good moment, too.

I didn't watch either of the first two Thor movies but I like the trailer that just came out. A Thor + Hulk movie sounds good to me.

the dark and gritty...Ice Cream Jonsey!

I have a digression about Hulk movies. Since our nephew started visiting. we see a lot of animated kid movies. I hate them all but this isn't about that. At the end there is always this incredibly stupid climax where trucks are being flung into the sky and people that fall from different heights catch up to one another and everyone sort of ignores that freshwater fish would die in salt water and vice versa. That's what makes Hulk movies unwatchable, the animators spaz out and shatter disbelief. Somewhere between Lou Ferrigno and CG Hulk banging CG Loki against the ground is something watchable, but we don't live in a world where that is possible.

I have one more digression, which is that the 1970s casting of Lynda Carter, Christopher Reeve and Bill Bixby were perfect. They're never going to improve on Netflix Daredevil, Charlie whatshisface, nor Robert Downey Jr. These are my digressions, thank-you for reading.
