uhhhhh....mmmmm?
Okay, it's nice that they don't start out a sequel with holding your hand like you never played the previous game, but...
Remember how the early to mid game was the toughest part of Enemy Unknown? From the point that frag grenades could no longer kill anything in one hit, to the point where you outfitted everyone with lasers?
XCOM 2 starts the very first mission at that point, plus some. Sectoids are now damage sponges (8 health, can shrug off two grenade blasts), can still fire a deadly gun while mind controlling, and they WILL mind control you from the very first mission. 2/3rds of the starting enemies can survive a frag grenade. Prepare to miss plenty of 80-90% shots. Oh yeah Sectoids can also resurrect all dead bodies as zombies while mind controlling you while shooting.
From the very first mission you're outnumbered, outgunned, and the mind control will further stack the odds against you. The game seems to think that starting you undetected every mission to set up an ambush will overcome this with enough planning. It won't. The feedback on line of sight is so lacking that it's next to impossible to set up perfect ambushes before you're detected, or at least without save scumming. I cannot fucking imagine trying this ironman.
First mission I have everyone on overwatch to pull off a point blank ambush from in cover, against enemies out in the open. 2 overwatch shots miss at 90% each. The third hits for a whole 3 damage against an 8 health sectoid. Sectoid mind controls one squaddie. A grunt kills another squaddie from across the map through cover. The remaining 2 squaddies panic and get themselves killed. This was the very first mission!
Waiting until everyone is in cover and overwatch with 90% hit chances before springing the attack, on the first mission before any strategic planning could come into play. Please tell me what I could have done better, Firaxis.
Uhhh....the strategic portion seems like it's less linear than the original game so far?
(Are you not supposed to immediately guess that the mysterious yellow suit female is the German doctor from the first game?) |
