The movie is about the loss of childhood innocence and becoming aware of your own vulnerability and impending mortality (represented by It).
Sex is the upside of becoming an adult outside of the protection of childhood. But meaningless flings are only a temporary distraction from the inevitable. The attempt to regain childhood innocence at the pool was never going to work (driven home by the fact that It takes the form of her dead father). The solution is the protagonist gets in a committed relationship so together they can watch each others' backs and stave off It (which is still following them in the final shot). |
