Fans on Reddit and Shroud of the Avatar’s official forums were surprised by the equity crowdfunding site’s disclosure of Portalarium’s financial state, which stands at $528,000 in the bank with monthly expenses of around $230,000. That seems rather low, considering that the game managed to raise $11,614,524 since the initial crowdfunding drive in 2013, via a mix of Kickstarter, early access game sales, pledges, and special events like telethons.

According to the documents his company is running on an $18 million deficit.

The MMO scene isn’t crowded. The genre is dead and there’s only a few worth playing and they are a big rotting mess. (FFXIV and EVE) The genre is a rotting corpse right now. Even Blizz pulled WoW out of the genre by adding sharding where it’s not even an MMO by definition anymore, just a multiplayer game.

This really cuts to why both this and SC have problems. According to Reddit, They had vague intentions to begin with and one of his key advisors is the same guy who worked on UO and put pressure on him to make it a MMO too. Since none of them have been developing games for years, they didn't realize that this genre isn't popular anymore. I remember in the KS that Garriott addressed fans who really didn't want a multiplayer component stating that they couldn't ignore how popular multiplayer games like Farmville had been. ....Yes you can. 90% of people who funded you just wanted a proper single-player Ultima ending. Another thing I read is that they're convinced that this game will sell well when it's done since 80% of gamers at cons haven't heard of them.

Both Roberts and Garriott have been out of gaming so long they are completely out of touch with the market but have heard of all these cool things that became popular since and want to try it out to cement their legacy as innovators with a new generation of gamers. Minecraft is popular? Must put in some of that. Sandbox is popular? Must put in AssCreed. Survival games are popular? Let's add in some of those. MMOs have whales? Must put in some MMO bullshit. Garriott strikes me as more sincere than Roberts but this isn't going to end well.

According to the article, the total income from Kickstarter projects declined 5.8% in 2016 from the year previous, while funds raised by successful video game Kickstarters were down a whopping 60% compared to 2015. The data they pulled showed that successful video game projects pulled in a collective $41.5M in 2015 — but only $17.6M in 2016.

Called it. There's been too many failures and it's obvious that guys who were creative forces at their companies needed suits and or business-minded creators to tell them to 'no" and to demand deadlines be met and to kick their friends and yes-men out of their orbit. Any of them could have told them that a budget around $20 million means they could make a solid single player ala Brutal Legend (with a tacked on multiplayer) or David Cage game maybe with a mobile or small indie game spinoff but an MMO would be a disaster.
