Back around the mid '90s when MCI Communications was a real telephone company before Worldcom ate them and engaged in so much fraud they went bankrupt, you could use MCI for making long distance or incoming calls if you had their credit card or a toll-free number. And I did (both); believe it or not the toll-free number was 1-800-TDARCOS.

At the time because of a quirk in the rules, I guess, incoming calls to an 800 number were cheaper than calling card or collect calls. With the $5 a month service charge for the 800 number, if you got more than 3 collect calls, 6 calling card or used more than 100 minutes of incoming calls the 800 number saved money.

And because the Internet was minor then, bills came by mail, and MCI had one nice feature that also saved money. If your bill was $1.00 or less you could skip paying it with no penalty, and they would just carry it over until you owed them at least $1.01.
