G.I. Joe was still trucking along. by Injustice 08/01/2017, 5:14pm PDT
As the figures became increasingly ridiculous, Larry Hama steered into the skid, turning the book into more of a military comedy (from the perspective of a Japanese-American Vietnam vet with a pitch black sense of humour). At the same time, loosening Comics Code restrictions meant the book got bloodier than ever. The Joes had their own satirical version of Operation Desert Storm running parallel to the real one, where a dozen of your favourite heroes got gunned down and buried in a trench in the desert, all because some hilariously neon underlings misinterpreted Cobra Commander's order to "get rid of" the prisoners. Near the VERY end of his run, when the toys had just gotten retarded with outer space shit, Hama repurposed a script he wrote in the '80s about American and Soviet astronauts forced to cooperate on a mission to stop an asteroid hurtling towards Earth into a multi-issue arc, a script that was later rewritten a million times to become the movie Armageddon. (The retarded-toy comic version was better, and I'm not just saying that because I read it when I was nine. At least, I don't think I am?)
