Joy Ride Turbo is a cartoon-physics driving game with extremely low gravity. Most racers which have you spending a lot of time in the air - such as the barely adequate GripShift, or the pretty good Hydro Thunder Hurricane (free until the 16th on Games with Gold!) - allow a certain degree of air control, letting you steer your vehicle in flight. They usually also let you use your boost as a thruster for even more dramatic changes in trajectory. This gives you something to do while your vehicle is airborne besides twiddle your thumbs and wait for it to come down.
Joy Ride Turbo gives you no air control. NONE. Instead, it turns twiddling your thumbs into a game mechanic. I'm not even exaggerating. The way you refill your boost gauge is by rotating the thumbsticks while your car's wheels are off the ground. It's a strong contender for the laziest, most cynical design decision I've seen all month. And I've been playing Need for Speeds! Do not buy Joy Ride Turbo. Download Hydro Thunder Hurricane for free, if you already have Gold, or check your dashboard for a one month for one dollar tile.
I got my copy of Joy Ride Turbo in a bag of Funyuns. I had no idea they could put something more disgusting than Funyuns in a bag of Funyuns, but there you go. |
