Does it count as a twist that instead of brainwashing black people as servants it was an even dumber old people mind transfer plot from Skeleton Key?
Yes! It retrospectively changes what the weird dynamic was between the maid and the couple: instead of it being awkward because she's a hypnotized slave, it's awkward because she's a mother-in-law who hates her daughter-in-law and has to pretend to be a maid.
Was hitting the deer just so the father open straight away with the psycho extermination lines? Was that supposed to be a tie in to his mother's hit and run death?
Yes, and also it creates another of these scenes that retrospectively changes once you know what's happening: you think maybe Rose is trying to get her boyfriend out of a ticket but in reality she doesn't want him placed in the area because he's about to be a missing person.
How out of place was the wacky best friend? Why wasn't the detective office scene left on the cutting room floor?
Jordan Peele said explicitly that Get Out was meant to be watched in a theater; the wacky friend was there for support to the idea that people are supposed to be yelling in the theater NO YOU DON'T GO INTO THAT HOUSE WITH THOSE WHITE PEOPLE. Can confirm, I saw it in a theater with a bunch of people who were also yelling at the screen in that way and Lil Rel's character was a nice complement, the theater experience was great.
I'm wondering if the very end was laziness, or if it was intentionally supposed to invoke the end to the original Night of the Living Dead to add tension.
According to the listicles of people who watched the commentary, the original script had the Night of the Living Dead ending for real, but he backed down because the tone didn't feel right. |
