Advice from gamer friend who actually wins matches:
- When you're starting out and learning the controls, try to land near a remote set of houses near a road.
- Why remote? This will draw fewer opponents as the loot will be worse, but you will get a chance to figure out how to use the inventory and map screen and try stuff out.
- Why near a road? Because vehicles drop near roads and if you're a long way from the circle then you'll need a vehicle to keep the game from becoming a 5k simulator.
- If you can land on a flat roof, that's a good thing to do: there's usually guns on flat roofs, also height advantage is a thing.
- The southern half of the map generally has much more loot than the northern half. The most loot- and opponent-dense part of the map is usually the military base on the southern island.
- One exception: there is an island at the NE corner that is chock full of great gear. You have to land near the NE coast, steal a boat, get to the island, then race your boat to the circle to get at it.
- Once you get good enough to play at an elementary level, the next big hill to climb is person-to-person combat. The only way to practice this is in-game, so if you want to get a lot of practice in a gaming session, start dropping into the more populated areas. (This is similar to the advice on how to get good at aerial shots in Rocket League: just start losing a lot by trying it until you figure it out.)
