Jonesy, powerline adapters mean you don't have to run cables through walls. by Saltlord 11/10/2017, 11:21pm PST
At risk of tdarcos idiocy I'm just gonna tell you a thing here. This is a powerline ethernet adapter:

I don't know about the company, this is just the only picture I could find on short notice that had the back and the front.

Plug one into an outlet near your wifi modem or router, connect it to the router by a short network cable.

Plug the other one into an outlet near your desktop, connect it to your desktop by a network cable.

Press the sync button on each unit within the same couple minutes if required, as in some earlier models.

You now have a connection that can carry a lot more data than you'll ever need to move over it (usually rated in hundreds of Mbps) that sends information by slightly changing the power in your house's electrical system.

I've used them for years and never had a problem. Older models go for $10-30 on craigslist because someone's moved or gone back to wifi for their mobile devices and tablet computers and is either too lazy to hook up a second router to one of these units or doesn't have a signal problem because of upgrades.

If you want more than one such system, many of the older ones and all new ones by the same brand follow a protocol that allows something like 16 units to be synced for traffic sharing throughout a building.

More expensive new models range from $35 on newegg when I last checked six months ago to $100+ retail for over the counter models from Best Buy that don't obscure access to your plug. Downside: they look like a glade plug-in to me and then I get the fucking jingle stuck in my head and want to die.

Good luck, ICJ

Curious why you're using wifi instead of powerline ethernet for a desktop if you NT by need stability? 10/18/2017, 9:44am PDT NEW
