I can see now that you were never properly prepared for any of this. I'm sorry, I know now that this has just been an unfair playground fight against the scrawniest kid. It wasn't nice. I hope you learned something from all this because if you didn't it'll just happen to you over and over. I'm a hundred percent genuine here, nothing would please me more than to see you come back from this to punk someone as hard as you've been wrecked in this thread by a little shaky composition and my refusal to bow to your attempt to frame the discussion within the bounds of your po-faced stubbornness and insistence on subject matter and civility.
Just for the sake of completeness, let me help you out. I'm just going to honor your request for a piece of civil discourse in one tiny area because of how bad it is for your position to leave this unaddressed and see if it makes you reassess a single thing, maybe even helps you improve. Here: if you're gonna be woke to Coates, if you're not just throwing the name around, you should know he is a sad-sack Afro-pessimist reparations-begging fuckup who supports tone policing and victim hierarchy politics. His plans to help the lot of his people are to tell white college students not to sing along to explicit hip-hop because the deprivation and discipline of this self-imposed effort will give them the character-forming experience of suffering, teaching them empathy.
His book, which is framed as an open letter to his son, tells his own child that black people's fortunes in life ride on the good natures of white people - that black people are incapable of controlling their destiny and that because white people are not incorruptible, blacks can only find safety in retreat into their own culture. As a father and a black intellectual, he is teaching his own child powerlessness in the face of white supremacy. Because Coates teaches powerlessness and has zero potential to change the social order by helping blacks achieve more power, white society has no problem nodding along when he gets on TV and speaks at schools and does book tours. His name is intellectually synonymous with maintaining status quo. He offers no hope, no solution, no expectation of change in favor of african americans when asked. He is thus not a genuine authority on social reform for black people. You using his name in passing in this argument is so destructive to your point about how insufficient current civil rights guarantees are that it practically cedes the whole fucking thing to me as if you'd name-dropped Booker T. Washington or Quisling or Goebbels. It is that bad.
Coates has a particularly rancid passage in Between the World and Me where he talks about how he felt safe disappearing into the totally disparate class cross-section of people at a Howard University barbecue. I live within walking distance of Howard. Anyone that can feel safe from the ills of the world there is incapable of seeing reality. Howard's in the middle of a fucked-up drug market of a neighborhood that's busy throwing black people out and super-gentrifying; black businesses fail there, black lives trend towards drug addiction, HIV, and violent death there. It is not a safe place for blacks to retreat to. There are plausible scenarios where the majority of Howard students will be white in a decade or two and that black holdouts will be total oreos, a complete betrayal of black culture. Coates is deluding himself in thinking he can escape into a crowd full of party crashers and sport-jacketed black people chained to flawed educations and heavy loans.
You're delusional if you think dropping his name in a discussion of the wider impacts of tax policy will win ground or let you paint others as ignant raciss. It makes you look shallow. This is because Coates is selling you a narrative approved by the ascendant groups in society that workaday black people have no use for. Most of them haven't heard of him. Those that do don't care.
I also live within walking distance of Georgetown University, which Coates famously elicited 'cultural reparations' from. These were great for a limited number of individuals who got scholarships but did nothing for blacks collectively. Members of my family got reparations from the German government - I'll let you guess what for since you mentioned Jews in your screed about how I was a racist. Let me assure you, the reparations we got impacted the welfare of Jews collectively, specifically holocaust survivors and their families. If my family had the choice of cultural reparations of the sort Coates got out of the academics in the US - here we can define these 'cultural reparations' as a product of the cultural left as defined in the works of Richard Rorty, the left that has existed in the US since the sixties and has pulled away from party politics in favor of academia and identity politics - if we were offered the cultural reparations instead of the fungible political reparations we got, where politics is defined in its purest form as a division of resources, which do you think we'd choose? Which helped us more?
You don't have to take my word on it. I'm just an eastern block refugee immigrant jew living in a black neighborhood. Feel free to see what R. L. Stephens, a black organizer, has to say on it all.
I have taken some pains here to demonstrate that a single facet of your worldview is utterly fucked in hopes that it will allow you to reassess more of it, but you probably won't. You're fucking welcome, you dumb cunt. Working you up to the point where you lost your shit on Fabio after he freely gave you perspective on your behavior was all shooting fish in a barrel. This is because your mind has the texture of soft mush. It is not sharp. You do not rate a real conversation today. I barely do myself and I could still fuck you up with no effort. Please work on your shit. |
