...bleh. The strength of Oath and Origin was they were wedded to their simplicity and the enemy and level designs took full advantage for a varied and challenging experience. Ys Seven, originally released for the PSP, tries to mix the fast simplicity of Ys with the endless grinding of a Monster Hunter and the result is a frankenstein's monster that's more or less the worst of both worlds.
Combat is way more complex, yet stupidly simple at the same time. Each character can learn 20 active skills but only equip four at a time, each skill can be leveled up through repeated use, and you have three tiers of abilities that charge each other in a symbiotic manner...
...but it all adds up to a whole lot of nothing because you end up fighting every single enemy the same optimized way.
I have more complaints but it's hard to summon the energy. Suffice to say I'm beginning to think I dodged a bullet with Ys VIII, which operates off the same type of combat. Playing Ys 7 only made me want to reinstall Ys Origin. |
