Such a meditative film needs to open with a burst of violence. Otherwise the first gunshot wouldn't come for 30 minutes, and nobody's going to stick around that long when they could be watching the Baby Blue Movie on CITY. Plus it's easier to sympathize with a character - especially a French/student/feminist one - when you've already seen her get shot in the head.
