Help me diagnose, Caltrops. by Mischief Maker 01/06/2018, 9:44am PST
Over Christmas break I was visiting family and for a week had my computer sitting in an empty apartment just warm enough to keep the pipes from freezing. Now I'm back and my computer has picked up a new peculiarity.

Half the time when I restart windows 7 (from the start menu) the machine gets stuck in a place where the USB mouse and keyboard are inactive (no lights), the HD isn't doing any churning at all, the monitor goes into energy-saving, but the fans are still running.

The only way I can get out of this is if I hit the hard reset button on the front of the case. When I do, Windows 7 loads normally with no error message about failing to shut down properly.

I checked my CPU with the intel diagnostic tool and it passed, and I did a memory check in BIOS and everything seems fine.

Does this sound like a Windows problem that can be solved with a fresh install, or a motherboard problem?

Stuck on bootup or shutdown? by Entropy Stew 01/06/2018, 2:32pm PST NEW
It's on shutdown. I'm burning disks in anticipation of an HD wipe as we speak. NT by Mischief Maker 01/06/2018, 4:14pm PST NEW
Could a dying soundcard cause this? by Mischief Maker 01/07/2018, 7:53am PST NEW

So it might not be the motherboard? by Mischief Maker 01/10/2018, 4:29pm PST NEW
Correct. Unplug everything and bring it back one at a time. by Ice Cream Jonsey 01/10/2018, 5:37pm PST NEW
Well it wasn't the soundcard. by Mischief Maker 01/10/2018, 5:50pm PST NEW
