Cloud Atlas is trickier. I think you'd have to be open to the idea of enjoying a preachy SJW circlejerk to begin with to get anywhere with it. I was riveted the whole way through.
If you're not going to take this seriously, then I'm out.
I admit, calling Cloud Atlas more mind-expanding than The Matrix was somewhere between deliberate trolling and backhanded compliment. Calling it almost as good as The Matrix, on the other hand, was a big open-palmed professional wrestling slap of a compliment. Because The Matrix is like Die Hard: a great fucking movie, even if the only question it's going to leave you pondering is what a TV dinner feels like. It's even possible that exact question was the jumping off point for the Korean McDonald's plotline in Cloud Atlas, though who can know the minds of men who would have their penises sliced up like the bananas in a split? Me, I can, because I watched Cloud Atlas and now my brain is bigger than the fancy Victorian lockets the Wachowskis keep each other's Adam's apples in.
SIDEBAR: If me and my brother ever decided to have sex change operations, I just know I would get all competitive and make the doctors give me two pussies. Even my pussy would have a pussy! Maybe a whole Russian nesting doll of pussies. That way my brother would always know I was at least twice the woman he'd ever be. I wonder if that's the sort of problem the Wachowskis have to deal with, in between making one good movie every decade or so? The thought of it only makes me admire their work ethic even more.

Love Is Strange (2014) doesn't go anywhere
And...?
And... set your expectations accordingly? It's the kind of movie where problems are introduced, get developed, and then we fade to an epilogue showing how life goes on regardless. Or doesn't, depressingly enough. I was so sold on the premise of John Lithgow and Alfred Molina playing a gay married couple forced to move back in with their families that it honestly never occurred to me the result might be a touchingly realistic slice of life instead of a classically homophobic farce. In retrospect, I should've been more concerned when they called it Love Is Strange instead of Uncles Buck, and the box art showed them crossing a street together instead of getting caught doing it in bunkbeds.

What.
You must've missed me bumping your Ghost in the Shell thread. Ignore the part where I say robot twice in a row while discussing Scarlett Johansson's body parts. That was a typo, not an attempt to sound like the Korean Hamburglar.
I also bumped your Rogue One thread. |
