Did you know that in 1766 almost nobody had their own computer? Even the largest clockwork mainframe - housed in Big Ben at the time - was less powerful than a Commodore 64. Today you could make at least three stamps per second yourself using mass produced hardware, but in the context of the times, the British assumption that they had an unbreakable clockwork monopoly was not as unreasonable as it seems to our generation (or even yours).
