I'm being stubborn and trying to get a Windows 7 supported setup for my new computer (can always upgrade to 10 in two years) and it's a bitch finding a new mobo that fits and isn't completely overpriced.

Anyone have any experience with refurbished boards? Is it stupid to even ask in this age of cryptocurrency mining?

Not stupid - if the idea is that you are paying less for a refurbished motherboard to keep your Windows 7 setup going for a few more years AND it's significantly cheaper than getting a new motherboard, go for it. As others have said, sometimes they are DOA or have problems so the key thing is to buy it from a vendor you trust. I have done the RMA thing with Newegg before and they were great.
