Is there life elsewhere in the universe? Probably yes, but... by Commander Tansin A. Darcos 05/16/2018, 11:52am PDT
If we look at the universe which consists of billions of galaxies each containing billions of stars, the question is asked whether or not there is life elsewhere in the universe.

The basic rules require
(1) a planet within the "Goldilocks Zone" from its star, that it neither be too hot nor too cold.
(2) a planet with oxygen
(3) a planet with water

We can go on from there with more requirements which might also be necessary, e.g. not too much solar radiation, not too much gravity, etc. Any way you figure it there should be anywhere from thousands to billions of planets to hold life, in our case, we're looking for intelligent life.

Now, first of all what we would have to notice some attributes of a planet that distinguish it from others, and what we are looking for are planets giving off "unnatural" radio signals. Something different from the background noise of the universwe and /or the cosmic microwave radiation.

Given that, three other things are required.
(1) We are listening along the part of the universe where intelligent life has formed;
(2) Intelligent life capable of developing radio must have occurred; and
(3) It must have developed radio transmissions no later than 33 years before the number of light-years that separate them from earth.

Reasons:
(1) SETI is only listening along a small piece of the sky; it doesn't matter how noisy our neighbors are if we're not listening into their back yard.
(2) If they're not using radio we won't know they are there.
(3) They have to start transmitting before we're listening. If there is a planet 10,000 light years from here, if we're listening now, their radio broadcasts have to have started no later than 9,967 years before 1985. If their world invented radio 5000 years ago, is still in existence and still continuously broadcasting to this day, we will not hear them for another 4,400+ years.
