I wanted to point out the whole issue because there is a big problem in places in Europe - especially the UK - resulting from people who derive from countries where marriages between first cousins are frequent, and their offspring having much higher levels of serious birth defects including Cystic Fibrosis. I also wanted to point out something that surprised me, that just a little more genetic distance tends to reduce the danger. Apparently, second cousin marriages have very little increased danger of these genetic problems in their offspring as typical stranger marriages. I also wanted to note that these issues have been recognised even in a place like West Virginia, which has a very bad reputation for inbreeding. I also thought it was somewhat amusing that by the intersection of incest law and marriage consanguinity that there are some relatives that the law forbids marrying but does not forbid having sex.
