Darcos 06/23/2018, 2:28am PDT In pre-1950s environments, especially when most people were going to end up living on a farm or ranch, the rules were a little looser in that a couple might be encouraged to engage in pre-marital sex, on the presumption were she to get pregnant it was the functional equivalent of marriage. In rural agricultural societies, kids are the equivalent of pensions and life insurance. Once a kid starts being able to either do picking on a farm, or use a horse or otherwise take care of cattle unassisted, that child becomes a valuable asset used to work the farm. Typically the father would teach all his kids to drive a pickup truck or other equipment on the farm as soon as they could reach the pedals and see over the steering wheel, say, 12 or 13. This practice is so common most states exempt having a driver's license for operation of trucks or farm equipment on public roads where the travel is 90 degrees across a public highway to get from one plot of land to another. Once the parent is too old to work the land themselves, their kids work it allowing the parents effectively to be supported by the kids working for the family. Conversely, in urban societies, kids are luxury consumption goods for which parents have them because they want them, and children are simply a consumption luxury parents have because they can afford them.
