Christopher "Kid" Reid does his charming hip-hop Pee-Wee Herman act all over this sweet-natured comedy about a party in a house. Despite containing only comedic violence, responsible sensuality, and a better message for teens than any John Hughes movie, House Party was unjustly rated R by the racist MPAA, purely on the basis of authentic language. I'm ashamed to live in a society that considers a father quoting Dolemite to his son more offensive than anything Charlie Sheen said or did on Two and a Half Men, but that's where we are at. (The Dolemite-quoting father was played by a guy named Robin Harris, who delivered the best comedic performance I've seen all year. I couldn't wait to get on IMDb and find out what he did next.)
There's a lot of fantastic music in this film, even though it wasn't a musical like I was expecting. There was also a lot less Step Up-style choreographed dancing than I was hoping for, though there is one pretty fly dance battle right in the middle. See this movie if you're like me and missed it the first time. I've rarely been so excited to have four increasingly terrible sequels to look forward to. |
