The real tipping point was when manga started to become accepted and popularized in the West - suddenly there is this outpouring of thousands of new, fresh, ideas for the medium. Plus both DC and Marvel missed the Graphic Novel train. Just how relevant are either of the comic big boys these days?
Though to be fair, I don't see much coming from Image or Dark Horse these days: Spawn is absolutely awful and we are apparently passed the hey day of the small, concise stories that actually have an end to them. Christ, DC went from Helix to Vertigo in 1993 and what has their "edgy" imprint developed since? Is anyone even trying anymore, or are we in the hellscape that comes after Watchmen? |
