Re: THE BLACKCOAT'S DAUGHTER (2017) (SPOILERS) by Fullofkittens 12/21/2018, 9:08am PST
Ok after about 15 minutes it becomes obvious that Sabrina is demonically possessed. She is on some kind of mission from a demon. She ends up killing the other girl and the nuns that run the school, then presenting their severed heads to the furnace in the school basement.

Then, in the parallel story... the good samaritan(???) guy that is helping the runaway says that his daughter died 9 years prior...and then he shows her a picture of the dead daughter...which is the girl you just saw get killed. So...that was supposed to communicate something to me but it missed me completely: the runaway is Sabrina, 9 years later. The two stories are not contemporaneous.

Here's why I got confused:
  • This is a supernatural movie where things are not what they seem. I thought that the picture was some kind of encoded Lynchian message about girls that get killed at the school, OR there was some kind of repeating thing where that girl gets killed over and over. I did *not* figure out that this was supposed to be her murderer unknowingly stumbling upon her victim's parents 9 years later.

  • Emma Roberts really is at least 9 years older than Kiernan Shipka but it is totally customary for 20-something actresses to portray high school students (This movie may be a long form extended riff on this???) so it did not occur to me that her character was supposed to be older.

So I got to the end (which I won't fully spoil) and had zero idea what had just happened. I was like...what, did this girl get possessed too? (That's not what happens.) So yeah, I intend to go back and watch it again now that I know what happens to see what I missed. I guess it's sort of like going back and rewatching THE SIXTH SENSE or MEMENTO. But yeah, felt pretty dumb when I went and read what I had failed to figure out. This is still a positive review.
