Frostpunk

What an absolute thrill ride the first time through... and I doubt I'll ever touch this game again, which is ironic because I was waiting for endless mode before purchasing.

After a couple false starts I cleared the entire tech tree AND hit every frostland event and survived the storm WITHOUT crossing the line. The tech tree is so basic, the only thing I'd do different if playing a second time is not fuck around with the labor-intensive coal thumper unless I was using child labor. Way easier than I expected it to be on normal.

But hey, I absolutely felt chilled to the bone by the aesthetics while it lasted.

Tokyo 42

Wonderful Mirror's Edge-esque visuals, delightful blade runner-esque music, and the gameplay really grew on me the more I played (classic difficulty). Reviewers throw around the term "bullet hell" willy-nilly, but Tokyo 42 really DOES make use of basic bullet hell maneuvers when you're in a shootout. It also rendered Brigador obsolete because it does the whole 3D bullets in an isometric playfield so much better.

I also really like picking off groups piecemeal with a sniper rifle in games and Tokyo 42 provides randomly generated missions with plenty of enemies scattered about on vantage points or patrolling the beautiful scenery for me to snipe to my heart's content.

My main complaint about the game is that guns and ammo are super expensive and money becomes increasingly hard to come by because random missions pay dick and scripted missions halve their payout each time you replay them. But you do have a katana and one pistol with unlimited ammo (which is more effective than you might think since this game is one-hit-kill, at least for human enemies.)

The Messenger

I was grumpy after buying this game because it's deceptively advertised as a Ninja Gaiden-style combat-heavy game, but actually it's more like a cross between Dustforce and Megaman.

That said it IS a good game and I like it better than Shovel Knight. All the ninja skills you accumulate are really nifty, and chaining them together to skillfully circumvent obstacles is really satisfying.

The music is kickass as well. That said, I really have zero nostalgia for NES-quality visuals.

Cuphead

What can I say that hasn't already been said? Incredible art-style meets quality (if forgiving) gameplay.

War for the Overworld: Ultimate Edition

I already had the base game from humble store, but the only way to get the expansions was to re-purchase on gog. And they promised some major changes with the 2.0 patch so what the hell?

This is Dungeon Keeper 3, complete with the same voice actor from the official two games.

Aven Colony

Haven't gotten very far into the game yet, but it looks like a TNG-optimistic antidote to Frostpunk's unrelenting despair.
