...which isn't required because the Author field here doesn't require it. People did it because they had some respect for the other people here (see earlier post re: this is a personality-driven site) and they hoped that they could build up some cred and get in conversations with those personalities and maybe gain a little of their respect too(?). Now we've some set of people (maybe only one guy?) who follows MM around going DURRRRRRRRR every time MM posts, with a new shitpost author name.
If you go back in time here we used have the Cable brothers, who were a semi-fictitious pair of prototypical internet trolls, one of whom seemed to really be an alt-right kid (before there was a word for that) and the other who seemed to pretend to be one for the lulz. (As an aside: I would have been more bothered by them if I had realized at the time that they were going to be what THE WHOLE INTERNET IS LIKE NOW.) But even they kept using the same small set of author IDs so it was tolerable enough: you knew which posts to ignore at least. I didn't agree with them about anything but at least I had some sense of who I was disagreeing with.
Now we have some set of people motivated-by-I-have-no-idea-what (and may be just one dude) who seem to have the goal of making this place suck more, shitting up every thread. I don't really understand the point of it, doesn't the whole internet already suck in that same stupid way? Why spend the time? Just to make sure that the rot is everywhere? No one likes it or thinks it's funny. It's utterly pointless. |
