For those of you wondering what the final vehicle Carmack hopes to use to win the 10-million dollar X-Prize will look like, this preliminary rendering is more or less accurate. The entire top 7' section is crushable - the pilot sits with his face towards the ground. Re-entry is essentially made with the vehicle ejecting a parachute from its tail, coming down to Earth nosecone first, and the nose crushing during the 'landing' such that the pilot comes down on his back.

This really doesn't have anything to do with gaming, and I'm not exactly a fan of Carmack, but I do find the stuff he does for rocketry extremely interesting.

What I'm wondering is where the hell does he store enough fuel to get that tiny thing into space, or prevent the pilot from getting fried?
