NFL predictions by laudablepuss 09/08/2004, 12:02pm PDT
In a variation on TMQ's Monday Night Football shafty predictions, where he looks at the teams that aren't scheduled for a MNF game and predicts that at least one of them will be playoff bound, I'm basing my predictions on the assumption that the experts' predictions are stupid.

And here they are.

First, I notice that they are nearly unanimous in their belief that the Chiefs will win the AFC West. Eric Allen mysteriously thinks his old team will win it, but he's the only exception. 9 out of 16 don't think the Broncos will even make the playoffs (a possibility I'm bracing myself for as well, honestly).

Only Merril Hoge thinks the Colts won't make the playoffs. They are unanimous in their belief that the Patriots and Ravens will make the playoffs.

Only faceless nobodies James C. Black and Scouts Inc. think that the Panthers will fail to make the playoffs. They all think the Eagles, Vikings, and Seahawks are locks. 11 out of 16 think the Packers will make it as well. 5 out of 16 think the Saints will make some noise.

If you add Peter King to the mix, you get more of the same. His predictions are exactly like all of the ESPN guys except he has the Broncos winning the Super Bowl. Otherwise, it's Colts, Patriots, Ravens, Chiefs in the AFC and Eagles, Vikings, Seahawks, and Panthers in the NFC. So should I bet the farm that those 8 teams at least will DEFINITELY, WITHOUT A DOUBT make the playoffs? Is it blatantly obvious that those teams will kick all kinds of ass, or could it be that these guys are all talking to each other and are now in the grips of groupthink?

Essentially everyone is predicting that the exact same teams who were in last year's playoffs will again be playoff bound this year. Except that every single one of them has dropped St. Louis -- apparently they haven't got a ghost of a chance so just forget about them -- and promoting Minnesota instead.

So here's my prediction, operating on the assumtion that if all of the experts (or an overwhelming majority) agree, then all of the experts are wrong: 4 of the sure-thing teams (Colts, Patriots, Ravens, Cheifs, Eagles, Vikings, Seahawks, and Panthers) will fail to make the playoffs. And 6 teams that made the playoffs last year won't be in the playoffs this year.

How brave am I? 8 teams in the 2002 playoffs failed to make the playoffs in 2003. 5 teams in the 2001 playoffs failed to make the 2002 playoffs.

I'm going to go a step farther and say that either St. Louis will make the playoffs or Minnesota will fail to make them, or both. If I had to pick just one option, I'd say both.

TMQ, by the way, is the only other person in the world (other than King) who thinks the Broncos will win their division. :(
