AIM/stomach pain by Fussbett 12/21/2005, 5:12am PST
My AIM contacts have been doing a lot of complaining, saying that I post too many logs and use it as a crutch (and also why didn't I post the one part where they said the one funny thing?). Haha, no, they've been complaining that I'm disconnecting and reconnecting every ten minutes. This means that if I drop someone an IM, they return to a screen full of my dial-up-esque connection messages. I know, I know, it doesn't sound like something that should be COMPLAINED about, really, but this is the internet, so the complaining was heard loud and clear.

I assumed it was my connection, my router, my problem, so I hit Google looking for "AIM disconnecting" and hit a lot of dead ends. Yes, there were people with my problem, but none of them helpful. Some blamed the LinkSys router, the most popular home consumer router, others saw their problems disappear magically.

I then traced the problem to Trillian. It seems that AOL has changed something on their side that make some people experience these disconnects with Trillian. The good people at Trillian have decided to react to this new challenge by being very confused. Thus began my day of trying new AIM clients.

GAIM:
Being opensource, GAIM is a fucking hassle to download, and at first I downloaded the wrong package. I decided that I'd stick with the 1.5 full release as I don't want anything "beta" in my opensource software. I want the "stable" release. Well, 1.5 wasn't so stable as it was static. Frozen. GAIM hung constantly, so I never got a chance to really take it for a test drive, but during the short run I noticed that it disconnected, so the problem might not be Trillian, but third party clients. I uninstalled it, and entered two new bugs into their opensource bugtracker database. Haha, no I didn't.

AIM Triton:
I bite the bullet and head over to AIM.com for the latest version of AIM, which is the new AIM Triton. I like when things get so important they fore go version numbers. I wonder what the codename was for this INSTANT MESSENGER while it was in development... Anyway, I download it, and discover that it sure is as big as a celestial body. You've gotta first get a stub downloading client which then downloads the main moon of Neptune for you, and it takes forever. My efforts went unrewarded as AIM Triton froze while trying to log me on, every time. Now I know this is my second hanging complaint, but you've gotta believe that this computer runs every other program in the world just fine.

AIM v5:
I had to get this off download.com because aim.com is now Triton-only. This piece of shit sucks, but it totally works. On the downside there will be no Fussbett logs until I figure out what is crippling my AIM connection and I get switch back to a logging program. On the upside, that's an upside for some people.

AIM/Trillian!:
I then got the brilliant idea of running the STABLE AIM with the MORE FUNCTIONAL TRILLIAN at the same time! Perhaps Trillian would log off periodically, but AIM v5 would hold the connection. Right? RIGHT? Well what actually happened was Trillian KILLED AIM v5. Now it doesn't log me on at all.

I'm thinking I have a virus of some sort.

Sharp stomach pain:
So after the AIM problems, I did some Christmas shopping, came home and then God or an invisible night elf rogue stabbed me with a knife in the upper stomach. My girlfriend kept asking if it was just gas, but the pain was too consistent, and lasted about 20 minutes. If it lasted 5 minutes more, I was going to head to the hospital. Instead it went away and then I ate a delicious club sandwich. Hopefully I don't have a peptic ulcer.
