I did not like:
* The GTA style mission system where the main character gets treated like a bitch. I realize that they are trying to tell a particular story and must corral the player through a certain sequence of events, but I wish they write it so that the player feels like they are doing things for their own reasons and not just getting bossed around by every douche in town.

I got the feeling throughout that Rockstar pulled some punches and changed stuff around in response to all the "Columbine sim" hysteria. I'm fine with my character not being a total dick, but does he have to give a speech every cutscene about how his bullying is to STOP bullying?

* The location of the bike garage. When I would head into town I never seemed to have my bike close by, so I'd end up skateboarding or stealing the first bike I saw. I would have preferred it if they had your bike stashed right at the main gate.

My #1 complaint would probably be long distance travel. My biggest gripe with San Andreas was the map size where bigger didn't mean better, with 5+ minutes of driving to get anywhere. I actually had more fun with Bully before the town opened up and increased travel distance. If there was one thing about I wish they changed about GTA, it definitely wasn't "make me constantly tap the X button to accelerate instead of just holding it down".

* Shop class. Sometimes I'd fail even though I was certain that I was hitting all the buttons, Brainiac. I think the 'rotate L3' animation is misleading because it looks like a lazy swirl but you actually need to spin it pretty fast in order for the move to register.

It seems like you actually have to know the animation ahead of time and start moving the stick before the cue even shows up. It's like they didn't finish programming it.

* The greaser clique. When I was in school I knew jocks, nerds, rich kids, and tough kids but I never knew 50's style car enthusiasts. I don't think the game is specific about what decade it's set in, but they seemed out of place. Possible better clique ideas - theater kids, marching band, goth kids.

Yeah, the weakest group character design. Other alternatives: hippies and stoners (most of the kids who took shop in my high school were stoners).

Other weak character design: Gary. Everyone seems to love him as a villain. Maybe it's just my experience with caltrops in thinking that bi-polars are wastes of flesh, but with his "warfare via spreading nasty rumors" approach, he came off less like a devious mastermind and more like a.......girl =(. Everyone turning against you all the time because Gary told a yo mama diss got kind of old the eighth time it happened.
