There are measurably more niggers involved in metal than in indie rock, even though there were no black Vikings. (Even though lots of black people have unpleasant childhoods.)
You are on the right track. In the first third of their video for the song, "This ain't a scene" , Fallout Boy examines this phenomenon with a musical experiment. They surround themselves with a group of respected black rappers and begin singing "This ain't a scene." The song starts with a low, poppy level of rock, and the blacks respond indifferently. Things progress, and by the time of the "This ain't a scene" lyric, Fallout Boy have increased the rock to a modest level. You may mistake this step up in rock level for the chorus, like I did. At this standard level of rock, the blacks become repulsed and even make fun of the band.
Some people, like maybe the author of that slate article, would probably end the experiment there and conclude that blacks don't like music of this sort. Fallout Boy, perhaps for the sake of thoroughness, decides to increase the rock level even higher until they are, in my opinion, rocking out. A remarkable things happens: at this level of rock, the blacks approve! Encouraged, the band goes even further and rocks just a little bit harder by smashing some shit. However, this incredibly high level of rock is unacceptable to the blacks and Fallout Boy is thrown out.
Blacks responses to guitar music summarized below...
Hardly rocking - Rocking - Rocking out - RO€KING OUT!
Indifferent ----- scornful - pleased ------ furious
So the reason behind the lack of black guitary music becomes clear once we've identified this very precarious musical sweetspot for the black race. Who would run the gauntlet between scornful and furious when you can rap about how pretty girls and make everyone smile? |
