Call of Duty 4...................... DS. :( by Jhoh Creebul, Witch Toucher O_O 04/07/2008, 10:23pm PDT
The DS version is a first person shooter, you aim by moving the stylus around the bottom screen. The top screen with the game shows what appears to be a kind of vaguely higher poly version of Goldeneye, but without all the fun crosshair headcapping people in the fuckin helmet leaving a smoking metal hole, or fuckin chucking remote mines everywhere, bugging out the facility level so that all projectiles (mines, rockets, grenades) hover in mid air, so you can fire akimbo rocket launchers, have the rockets stay there, run around while all the alarms go off, wait for dumb soldiers to stand next to the floating magic rockets, and then shoot them so they explode manually.

Anyway, yeah, COD4 for the DS doesn't have any of that charm. Instead, it seems to be based very loosely on the events in COD4, but is not really a remake. You do missions that end up similar to the ones in COD4, but all out of sequence, and completely different shit. Also, it's mostly a series of cramped corridors strung together, with enemies who will simply stand there while you spray gunfire into them. No one takes cover or barely moves.

And yet, every once in a while, they'll chuck some giant scripted sequence set piece at you, like a tower being knocked down, or someone blows up half a building in real time game engine, or you man a machine gun on a truck, or a minigun on a helicopter. They actually recreated the AC130 mission on the DS. Except of course the explosion effects in this game are almost the same as seen in Quake 2, and you can't quite level buildings darken the screen as the giant explosions almost suck up all the light because they're so huuuuuuuuuge. And no airplane droning or blam of the firing of the shells for some reason, the only sounds are the squeaky chipmunk voice clips and the sound of shells being reloaded.

They also put in a couple touchscreen minigames for planing and defusing bombs. For planting a bomb, you have to do a pipe game, like Pipe Dream or the hacking in Bioshock, except you're not timed and don't have to make any dicey underwater moral decisions......... underwater. For defusing, you just trace a cluster of wires from one node to another, it's really easy. There's usually two wire clusters, so you trace one, and then you trace the other. There's not much of a trick to it, you just draw over them. They aren't small or anything.

The bottom screen, with your aiming, lets you swap weapons and bloo blee. Along the right side is the icon for your gun, tap it and you reload, hold it and you can switch to your alternate, which by default is an unbelievably shitty pistol, possibly the worst pistol in game history. If you double tap the touch screen, you go into IRONSIGHTS MODE for more accurate shootan. I guess it's not a Call of Duty game if you can't go into ironsights. But still, when I'm fiddling with the ABXY buttons for movement and scribbling all over the touchscreen to look around, I'd rather not have more mechanics to make this complicated. I love it in the COD games, all of them (except the MUCH INFERRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRIOR CONSOLE GAMES *PUFFS FINE HAND CRAFTED OAK PIPE* HM YES), because I feel all spayshul forces elite and choo kooking my gun before GOING INTO ACTION and aiming right down the sight to blast some sand sucking terrorist fuck in the eyeball. It just doesn't really work out in the DS version, it's not nearly responsive enough, it makes you walk slow and you can find yourself double tapping over and over again to bring the fuckin thing down so you can run away from grenades or some shit, and then you can try to walk and suddenly they come up when you're trying to move and all this gay ass shit. The touchscreen also has a grenade icon below your gun for going to grenades, and then when there's shit to interact with there will be a hand icon above the gun.

You can switch guns in this game, but there are only 5 weapons total, the pistol, the M4 with reflex sight (no grenade launcher of course PSH), an MP5, a Mac 10, and a sniper rifle. I think there's actually an Uzi too, but I don't know why because there's already a Mac 10. You're so overloaded with ammo throughout the entire game that I don't see why they don't just give you infinite ammo. Another thing that sucks is every time you die you go back to default weaponry for the mission, which means they give you the shitty ass piece of shit pistol as the alt. Half-Life 1 is the last game to have a non semi auto firing handgun, and it's the only one that deserves to get away with it, because it actually made a handy sniper weapon, since careful aim meant you could hit anything at any distance. For COD4 DS, it's just a piece of shit. Moreso in ironsights, because every gun is sort of a liability in ironsights mode, because you're stuck there and you can't move or duck or prone, you just have to hope that all the enemies that can see you are the ones right in your sights. They usually aren't and you have to make your hands fuckin ache and get all sore fiddling with the touchscreen and buttons and gripping the DS.

In the end, this game just makes me want to play Call of Duty 4: Real Edition.
