There are many great aspects to this story, but my favourite might be how Lum still thinks, despite the self-deprecation of telling the tale, that he was the superior intellectual combatant on that night. While sure, he might be fat, at least he's not stupid like this street corner "freaky" person. The zinger is sarcastically labeled a "witty riposte", while Lum's *STARE* is described as something a sheriff or forum moderator might use to end violence against women.

In reality though, a fat guy gave a creepy stare to an angry man who instantly threw off a funny one-liner. The fat guy had no comeback so he simply obeyed.
