According to his account, Yoshiki Okamoto's proposal for Time Pilot was initially rejected by his boss at Konami, who assigned Okamoto to work on a driving game instead. Okamoto secretly gave instructions to his programmer to work on his idea, while pretending to be working on a driving game in front of his boss. When Time Pilot was a success, Okamoto's boss claimed credit for Okamoto's idea.
Okamoto is cool and all (PSH!) but it was pretty unforgivable that Gyruss wasn't designed with a spinner. The video has things at a pretty crazy speed, as the spinner position is mapped directly into RAM, but it's definitely an improvement over the joystick for both games.
There is a thread about the mod here. In related news, are the developers of MAME still a pack of unloved, greasy, screechy nerds with absolutely no social skill that ruin retro gaming?
I'm compiling mame 118 and adding this diff and hiscore diff.
You have to ADD hiscore to MAME these days? The answer is yes for the MAME devs: still losers, all.
