Win Condition: Two of the three major console makers must have a system that uses a cartridge to deliver the game to the system. If there are only two console makers left, then only one needs to be cartridge based. "Two generations" from now will be marked when Nintendo, Sony, and Microsoft have all released two more TV-set top systems, or have announced they will no longer release a system. "Cartridge" is defined as a piece of console-specific hardware that contains media and at least one microchip or equivalent. A cartridge cannot be any off-the-shelf media storage solution, but must be custom made for the console, not just custom-formatted. The following do not count as cartridges, nor will their future equivalent:

This would be the ultimate, "See??? We are trying!!!" move to appease stupid stockholders by blaming piracy for shitty games or a VirtuaBoy/PCjr-style mistake on the part of Sony, Microsoft, Nintendo or a hypothetical fourth manufacturer.

I could see it if a public company with incompetent management suddenly decided to make a console. EA, for example. (As a further bonus, EA could go right back to having a six-second pause at the title screen while it was "loading," as they used to do for the NHL series of games on cartridge. That'd be delightfully retro.)

The price of an optical disc is just always going to be so much less than even the plastic housing of the cart, isn't it?

Honestly, if Sega were still around, I could see this coming about. Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo do not need any one software publisher. There would have to be a consortium of software publishers who band together and say that they are not making games for a particular system unless that system uses carts. When I think about the fags bleating about piracy, I think of EA (30,000 downloading Spore will cause them to go berserk), CryTeam (too small to be relevant), and... some others that made a bad game and blamed piracy for low sales. Moving to carts wouldn't stop piracy, but it would give all involved a chance to point to the sales figures of the new console and get jobs in other industries, having created the illusion that they solved a problem.

That being said, Ray is much smarter than me and undoubtedly has an angle I am not considering.
