Re: Questions

How many videogame cutscenes have you watched where the badass protagonist pushes away a briefcase full of money and says he'll do the job just for the challenge? What could be more appealing than laughing in the face of death? We may be cowardly social outcasts in the real world, but why can't we be Chuck Yeager in the imaginary videogame one?
If you could break the sound barrier for the first time in history in a completely safe manner by putting in several extra, not very large chunks of money, somebody would have done that, right? Rather than risking human lives etc. I don't know, I only watched a little of the clip. Don't I get to be a little bit excited about reaching a dangerous place--a place, mind you, not just a number--that almost nobody else can reach?
What's that you say? The hardest boss of all time? Note how TWICE he stops short of finishing off a section of the boss' health bar to make sure there are a large amount of bullets onscreen to convert into point items. The high score is all the encouragement you need.
Okay except I'm not that guy. And even if I were there'd still be lots of other casual fans of this sort of game--casual meaning they don't really get it--who'd just want to take part in exciting battles with cool enemies in interesting settings, and who'd take whatever continue chances they got. Right? If the high score is enough encouragement, why were you arguing that people should pay attention to the score? I think that if some of these games encouraged skilled play, instead of hiding the possibility of it for the sake of broadening their audience or whatever, then a larger percentage of the people who start out playing them casually would end up becoming skilled players. And I still want to know whether they ever actually do this!
