The unlocks are often worse than the first gun.
The unlocks are often worse than the first gun you get in a class. At first I hated this, but now realize it's decent, because it means everyone is competitive right out of the gate (well, except the poor saps who can't rez or repair) and it means switching to another gun is something you do to tailor the class to your style rather than "this gun is clearly superior". Although occasionally the guns are clearly superior. For example, the PKM does more damage than the M249 and with less kick, but has a slower rate of fire and smaller mag. Elementary pros and cons I know, but in BC2 it's very slight, these gains, and it means I stuck with the PKM for a long time! I didn't move up with the medic until the M60, the fourth unlock, because it's got huge power and the slow rate of fire doesn't deter me. On the downside, it also means I'm walking around the near future with a Vietnam-era machine gun to compliment my WWII pistol. Can I trade up my knife for a bayonet? The other example of the unlock path being hazy is the first sniper rifle that does the same damage as... every other sniper rifle. Only the M95 does more damage at like 25 meters where the M24 drops off the 75% power and the M95 doesn't drop to 75% power until 40 meters. At -10 meters and 40+ meters they're the same rifle except the M95 has less bullet drop, can hurt vehicles a little bit and reloads SLOWER. The M24 also knocks down trees, disappointingly, ES. Bullets! Did you know a bullet from a pistol is over twice as powerful as a bullet from a light machine gun? This rate of fire reverse power scaling reaches a ridiculous climax with the Blackhawk chainguns, which are seriously the worst fucking guns in the game. You have to lay fire on a guy from a great distance, on a moving platform you don't control, with a huge spread of bullets... and hit the enemy like 4 times.
