Re: The season was cancelled.

The owners locked out the players in an attempt to get them to accept some financial responsibility.
..but right now because the collective bargaining agreement had expired, as it does every couple of years.
Right before the season was about to be cancelled the players gave in a little and said they'd accept a cap.
...but the cap they proposed was $49 million, versus the league's desired cap of $42.5 million. $42.5 million somehow saves the league, but $49 million is outrageous. The league's counter offer was a cap of $42.5 million (AGAIN!!!) but the removal of the linkage between cap and revenues, their big concession. The media went ape about the $6.5 million dollar difference that sunk the season, but both side were quick to point out that it's not that simple, and many other beefs in the contract kept the two apart. Not just the $6.5 cap difference. A recent poll on the Canadian sports channel showed that 75% of the responders blamed the players, 25% blamed the owners. I guess that's because it's multi-millionaire atheletes seen as complaining. Again. But why people would then "side" with multi-billionaire businessness men instead is beyond me.
