1.8 is here
It's quite a different experience. I spawned in a huge swamp biome, surrounded by a dozen swamp cows. (Just regular cows, not new mobs.) The swamp is very swampy, with vines on the trees and trees with different growth patterns. Protip: don't cut down trees that are growing up out of the water if you want to replant them since saplings can't be planted in water. You can work around that but why bother. Found a cave and went exploring . . . not too far in I found an abandoned mine complex, complete with ruined rail lines, wooden-lined shafts and wood arch supports. And a nasty blue spider mob spawner. These guys are 1x1 apparently and poison you! Food no longer heals you, you just have to eat occasionally to keep up your strength. First thing to go if you haven't eaten is your ability to sprint. Later you'll actually start taking damage (no knockback thankfully) until you starve to death. Good news: food is stackable up to 64. If you get poisoned, you just gotta wait it out, and then you heal damage over a short time, like a minute or so. If you haven't learned this lesson yet, learn it now: don't ever dig the block under your feet. The abandoned mine complex has 1 block thick floors over 89234534 block deep pits. O_O I made a bunch of ladders on my second trip in. Haven't seen the NPC ghost towns yet (NPCs arrive in 1.9). The new lighting effects are pretty cool and overall this is pretty interesting. My friend and I have a lot of work to adjust our mod to this new code base. We haven't yet distributed it, that'll probably be pretty soon.
