People are unpleasant, unattractive, dull, possessed of bad taste, and self-righteous to boot. Even when they're rich and gorgeous, they contrive to be unhappy, and/or judgmental dickheads, or worse, <i>patronizing</i>. But I've gotten less and less mileage out of writing people off for their immediately-obvious failings over the years; the situation has degenerated to the point where I can't even remember to hate everyone I have good reasons to hate. Awful but true: some of those pretentious and pompous failed writers and willful fedora-wearers are not actually thought-criminals. It's not necessary to agree with everything they say or to make them your excellent friends who deserve your sympathy for 100% of their foolish choices. It's also not necessary to punish them for the odious transgression of starting a book and failing to finish it. By the way, this is a theory I fomented right here on Clatorps. I've stopped condemning people to the infinite solitary darkness of their basements just because they read too many sci-fi paperbacks or wear 3X sweaters or interrupt me at dinner to speak a lot of nonsense about the gold standard. While I can't recommend this practice to anyone else - aside from being difficult, it's unlikely to buy you anything you want to have - I've found that I personally worry less about being hideous now that my standards of hideousness have become so relaxed. On a doctrinal note, Unitarianism is an outgrowth of Christianity and many members identify as Christian. [/quote]
