Addiction is a genetic, physical problem in the brain. Not a high BAC.
It's just as facile for you (or someone else) to say "If you're addicted you should stop!" as it is for me to mock that idea by saying "If you have cancer, don't!". If it were that easy then it'd work. We are surrounded by evidence that it doesn't. Abstaining doesn't end addiction. It only allows your body some time to heal some side-effects of addiction. A person who is sober for 20 years isn't done being an addict, unfortunately. Put a few shots of booze in Craig Ferguson or Jim Norton's belly today and they're fucked. The third factor to consider is that people who know they will die and do not want to die and can afford the best healthcare still can't prevent themselves from ODing. We can tsk tsk their lack of willpower all we want but for my money if someone is dying against their will because of a genetic disorder then maybe we should think of it as an actual problem and not simple irresponsibility.
