Selling God: A zillion times better than Religulous
Unlike most religious documentaries that talk about how silly religious beliefs are/were or how spooky it is that religious people have that much power in our country, this movie examines modern christianity as a meme, and the mechanics that keep it strong in our culture from a marketing perspective. It starts out strong, going over how religion 1) Creates a need 2) Offers a product to fulfill that need 3) Creates Rewards for buying and Consequences for not and 4) Creates Urgency to buy today. Unfortunately this great concept can only hold the first hour or so of the movie, and the remainder slips back into goofy beliefs and spooky power territory, lifting one joke wholesale from Mark Twain's "Letters from the Earth." But that first half is much more thought provoking than most of the religious documentaries I've seen over the past few years and since it's free to watch, I recommend it. Be warned that it's low budget and shows.
