I had the same experience
Actually I was mostly interested in the movie maker, but as far as I could tell you had to play the single player career game to (fucking) unlock all the equipment. The Sims has been one of the worst trends in games ever. So many game that could have been good ruined by that dollhouse horseshit. Ghost Master in particular struck as something that should have been a blast but was totally sunk. Here's a new rule for developers: if your game has even a whiff of strategy to it, do NOT make the player's success rely mostly on unpredictable AI behavior, and for the love of FUCK do not saddle me with individual "needs" meters. Tried getting into Dungeon Keeper 2 off GOG.com. I kept plugging away at the campaign thinking the fun stuff would unlock later. The first missions were slow tech and feature trickles. The problem with the game was that there wasn't any strategy involved, you didn't have much control over what happened, and your minions just weren't interesting enough to watch for it to be that casual of a hands off game. Eventually I hit a mission that required me to possess a unit so I could have the rest follow me and overwhelm an enemy position, but couldn't figure out how to make the follow command work after mashing every button. I couldn't dredge up the effort to check gamefaqs and just gave up.
