Guess Who Fucked Up X-Com Now

Re: They're valid... if you are a fan of the original.

I didn't play the original. I tried to get into it a couple of years ago but I didn't feel like reading the 300 page manual to a game that only plays in a 640x480 box.
Heh - this is what got me into the original: I was working at an Electronics Boutique with a bunch of older guys who LURVED X-COM. I didn't see the appeal. The game shows up at a $4.99 SKU one day in 1996 or 1997 so I say "fuck it" and buy it on their recommendation. FoK, these were good men. One guy was in his late 60s, just doing the video game store thing as a reason to get out of the house and away from his wife. I, like many others, couldn't get out of the Skyranger at first and thought it was a dumb game. But they gave me some advice until I got into it, and then I was hooked. If I didn't have a advocacy team getting me through the opening stages I don't know if I would have continued with it.
The complaint that "in the original I had to look at 15 stats to understand what my guys would do!" is, to me, a complaint that this game doesn't suck as much as the old one did. I don't want to look at 15 stats! That sounds terrible!
Whoops, just to clarify: troops were rated on somewhere between 10-15 skills. Maybe 20? Some were useless like "throwing." Some were useful, like the ability to dump a load of rockets into somebody's face, ha ha ha! But they had really cool bar graphs with your stats, and you could see where they started and how they improved over time. It had the same appeal as baseball statistics do. It gave you something to look at when you "bought into" troops that started to rise up. Like, you've been playing XCOM for a while now. You've probably grown attached to a few of your troops. Wouldn't it be cool to see how their skill in plasma weapons has increased over time? Not something you need to concern yourself with at first, but kind of cool after growing attached to your troops. Unless you aren't growing attached to the people in your life now, Dexter. ICJ
