The chink ends up being the worst part of every zombie movie. The only one I can think of that handled it decently was REC, and at least the Dawn of the Dead remake was so fun up until that point that you really didn't care.
It was the worst part of the Dawn of the Dead remake but at least they were smart enough to blow past it in a few minutes. The reason why zombie movies *need* the chink is that movies need an arc, but a zombie apocalypse is the end of the world. The protagonists have to succeed or fail at something.
Also it didn't really fuck up the survivor's plans. They had to ditch the mall they were going to ditch anyway by driving off in the vans they were going to anyway. A lesser zombie movie would have had everything fall apart with most of the cast being killed by that, or by the "one survivor hides being bitten" part. That's another aspect DotD 2004 was refreshingly brilliant with; all it does is kill off the idiot hiding the zombie and the old person you knew was going to die anyway. Everyone goes down in a blaze of glory with propane and chainsaws. Not a single death from furniture tripping. Slow zombies are over Walking Dead terrible etc.
