I never played Ultima III, but Ultima IV was my jam
In 5th grade (1987) my buddy and I played all the way through it, it took months. I still remember being so elated when we figured out how to get the mandrake reagent for spells, it was one of my life's historic hi-fives. It came with a cloth map! The map was desperately important to your success, we studied it like archaeologists. Ultima IV felt like it had a huge and persistent world, and you were interacting with it in an important way. Dragon Age (1) is the only recent game that felt a little bit like that, and it only scratched the surface. I also went back and played I and II in junior high, not as awesome but hey, they were video games.
