Directors are more important than writers.
Directors are more important to movies than writers. If a director doesn't like something that is in the script, he can just not do it, or completely de-emphasize it. Writers don't have much creative control once the script leaves their hands. The script is really only a guideline... in olden times, it was a pretty loose one. Nowadays, with the bloated CGI monstrosities we've been seeing, maybe people take the script more seriously. But I don't think that's necessarily a good thing. We could debate about what would happen if a great director took a horrible script, I guess. (Probably a highly ironic movie would get made...) But really, how many great directors are likely to do that?
