Edge of Tomorrow is 2014's Looper
The best entertainment movie of the summer*, and probably the year, which means it's doing awful at the box office while Think Like a Man Too opens at #1. A better mechs vs monster movie than that godawful turd Pacific Rim. Everyone's probably told you it's Groundhog Day meets Starship Troopers already, which is true (with a bit of 12 Monkeys), but it refines the formula instead of rehashing it. Every time it's in danger of getting repetitive replaying the same sequence over and over, it changes gears and takes a new approach. Cruise acts just like a normal person would and it makes sense when he doesn't do the stone cold logical thing. Emily Blunt being a badass wielding an anime sword should have been Joss Whedon levels of awful, but it works here and makes sense later in the story. There's a lot of genuine cleverness to the script. A scene involving Tom Cruise and a truck is the highlight of the year. Bill Paxton gets to be the asshole sergeant during an alien infestation this time! The amount of restraint it must take for a modern alien invasion movie to NOT make the scientist character a wacky comedy relief eccentric like shitswill for stupid people Pacific Rim. The only complaint is that there are one or two gratuitous action scenes that go on too long. Most of them are necessary to the story and keep you engaged, but then much like Minority Report they'll have a pointless chase scene free of suspense that feels like it fell off of a Final Fantasy movie, just because they felt like they had to cram it in there. Definitely go see it before the poor box office take makes it go away. I've had dreams for 2 days of Tom Cruise getting shot in the head. Positive! * Though I haven't seen 22 Jump Street yet so maybe that will be it. Definitely go see 21 Jump Street if you haven't already. Michael Bacall might be the greatest upcoming hope for comedies.
